If you’ve ever unrolled a new rug before, you’ll know how tedious it can be to flatten a rug and smooth out the creases. It can almost take the joy of buying a new rug for your home décor! Unfortunately, rug creases and kinks can also occur if you're pulling a rug that has been rolled or folded out of storage. If you’re struggling to flatten rug wrinkles, curled corners, and bent edges, here are some hacks on how to get creases out of rugs at home.

Flatten rugs with furniture

If you’re having trouble getting rid of those pesky corner curls and curled edges on your rug, try using furniture to anchor your rug down. As we’ve done with our gorgeous, cream-shaggy rug, lay your rug flat on the floor and arrange your furniture so that the heaviest points weigh down the curling edges of your rug. If you have a sofa or table, the object’s weight will push back against the fibres and force any creases to smooth out. As a result, the rug will make a great focal point for your living room/dining area!

Of course, if you don’t have space to rearrange your furniture, you can always use books, plants, and other heavy objects to weigh down your rug edges.

Flatten rugs with heat

Heat can be an excellent method to smooth out wrinkles and creases in rugs, especially in natural sunlight. As demonstrated with this stunning Star Woven outdoor rugs, lay your rug flat in direct sunlight for about 1 or 2 hours, and that should be enough to release wrinkles and creases.

If you don't have a large patch of sun, flip the rug over and use a hair dryer to heat the creases of the rug to release them. Make sure you hold your hair dryer 6 to 9 inches away from your rug and use a sweeping motion when drying it. Alternatively, steam press the curled or creased areas with an iron. Use a low heat setting and apply light pressure with a piece of paper acting as a barrier between the iron's heat and the rug to prevent scorching.

Back-roll your rug

If your rug is curling upward or under, try back-rolling it or folding it the opposite way to work out the kinks. Then, as we’ve done with this sleek Afghan runner, keep it in that position for a few minutes (or longer, depending on the extent of the crease), and then unroll it the other way.

Likewise, do the same with edges and corners to ensure that the rug is flat and straight.

Prevent wrinkles with an anti-slip rug underlay

Prevention is the best method, so be sure to use an anti-slip underlay underneath your rug as it not only keeps your rug from creeping but also prevents future denting or wrinkling, which can wear out your rug. Try our Foxi Anti-Creep Underlay for carpeted floors, and for hard floors, use Supergrip2 to stop your rug from creasing.
